Both the Geek Husband What Rules and I listen to a lot of podcasts, but our tastes tend to diverge massively. I listen to a lot of supernatural, cryptozoology, paranormal podcasts, horror critique and dramatic horror podcasts like Archive 81 and The Magnus Archives.
BTW the first two episodes of the new season of the Magnus Archives have dropped and they are still good. So good.
Anyway, I was listening to Bizarre States, put on by Nerdist, which is pretty great. It’s sometimes spooky, sometimes not, frequently silly. And the GHWR will sometimes listen in on a segment or two, but he’s not real into it. Then I had him listen to an episode of the Bizarre States that had Kyle Kinane and Dave Stone.
Kyle Kinane is one of the GHWR’s favorite comedians. In the course of the segment, they mentioned that they have a podcast called Boogie Monster. It’s nominally about paranormal things, cryptozoology and everything else. But the first 10-30 minutes is usually just the two of them going through their weeks and talking about food.
So, he’s totally into the first part, but he also tends to stick around and listen to the second part where they get into the spooky, cackling along with me.
If you’re looking for something like Astonishing Legends where they research exhaustively, or even Expanded Perspectives where they do a fair amount of serious research, this will not be the podcast for you.
Not to say they don’t research, they do, but they also drink for most of the taping, and there’s a lot of laughter and jokes. Honestly one of the best things is Kyle Kinane making terrible dad joke-style jokes, and then groaning in disappointment at himself. Or when he scares himself and gives himself the shivers. They are still updating, which is nice, having found several podcasts who have pod-faded over time.
I’m only a few in, but I am loving it so far.
In other news, I had to drop Faculty of Horror because of transphobic comments, and some internalized misogyny issues. Which bums me out a little. It was right up my alley.
