First, I had a really good time, in spite of a migraine on Saturday. I went back Sunday and got to see a ton of people I’d missed while huddling on the stairs waiting for my ride.Sunday I went a little over budget in the exhibition hall, well, in Artist’s Alley. I bought several comic art prints, a shitload of stickers and enamel pins, and several graphic novel or comic collections. The Geek Husband What Rules also bought some stuff, including buying me a new Winter Soldier t-shirt, and some pins and stuff. Because apparently I was super, super pathetic, huddling inside with my sunglasses on. Yay me.
The panel went well. “Fan Culture and the New Meta,” which is basically how social media allows a wider audience to do literary analysis on pop culture, and really interrogate the text. And, as pointed out, the panel was all white women. And here’s where I break into my ECCC squeeing to say something very serious, and make a promise.
I will never again be on another panel that is all white women. I am actively building a directory of WOC whom I can suggest along with me, or in my stead. I promise. This is long overdue, and I’m sorry it took me so long to pull my head out.
This year at ECCC I saw so many more nerds of color than I had before, and so many more of them cosplaying, and looking like they truly felt welcome and like part of the community. And that was fantastic. And I want that to last.
So I’m going to leave you with some of the awesome cosplay I saw there. You may have seen these on my Twitter Stream. Probably more later.
The amazing @S_Hero4Hire
That is some fab cosplay! I love Jubilee’s fireworks, that Storm has the perfect attitude, and Shuri’s (? I am bad geek, I have not seen the movie yet) armpiece. And, OH! that first cosplayer, her outfit! I like the 2nd one, too, but I have less knowledge and so less knowledgeable feedback.
The first cosplayer was Queen Ramonda from Black Panther. You definitely need to see it! It’s amazing!
