Hey, yeah, there’s been a lot of heavy thinking going on over here. and I kind of got it on you guys. I have a new things to talk about about but I don’t know that any of them merit an entire post.
I kept seeing an article come up on my feed, or several articles, all saying that “If 5G fails, AT&T will shut down DC Comics!”
Ok, I thought, that’d be stupid, but let’s see what’s going on.
Ethan Van Sciver is the sole source of this rumor that I can find. The only person saying this, is someone who is, at best, barely relevant. And I highly doubt that clown shoe is placed anywhere NEAR enough to the top of the food chain to have any insight worth having. Please quit giving him pixels. He’s an asshole.
But I decided to look into this further, and found that DC fired Dan Didio. There is currently speculation as to whether or not the big 5G event is going to happen at all now. Rumor has it he was fired because he created a hostile work environment, but it does not say for whom.
I am not particularly sad to see him go, as someone who could not let his personal dislike of characters like Stephanie Brown color how they were treated in the DC Universe. There is a big difference between, “I don’t like this character, and that’s my personal taste,” and “I don’t think there ever should have been a female Robin, so we’re going to pretend Stephanie Brown didn’t exist as Robin.”
Sigh.
That article I linked was one of the only ones that wasn’t trash. If you google it, you’ll find hordes of fanboys decrying this greatest of injustices.
Look, I don’t know why he was fired. And I’m reasonably sure as one of the two “Publishers” at the helm of DC, he’ll be fine financially. But this does bring up something I want to talk about.
Comics publishing has to change. And it is, just slowly. The money is not in the single issue paper copies, it’s in graphic novels and electronic formats. And yes, both DC and Marvel have had electronic subscriptions for awhile now, and that’s good. But like the publishing industry in general, they aren’t going far enough fast enough.
And no, I don’t know exactly what that looks like, I’m not a business person. I can make some guesses and tell you what I’d like to see. But those would just be guesses. I just know that the way things are is broken and needs fixing.
First, remove Diamond from mix.
Ok, so, yeah. I guess that did kind of merit a whole post.
I don’t think AT&T is going to shut down DC if the 5G thing doesn’t come off, or does and doesn’t work. I don’t know why DC fired Dan Didio, but I’m sure he’ll be fine. He’ll golden parachute his ass to safety somewhere.
I do really think the comics industry needs an overhaul of its publishing practices and attitudes. We’re still getting a lot of battle lingerie and “boobs and butt” poses.
So, yeah, I don’t know what Didio’s firing means for DC, but I don’t think it means the end of the line.
