Geek Girls Rule! #359 – Review: Dungeons After Dark Coloring Book

3675189891846031849?account_id=3So, I backed this when I found out about it, and the physical copy has finally arrived!!!!  Billed as a “Coloring Book for Adults,” by Cori Redford, I’m glad I backed this book.  If you’re into the adult coloring craze sweeping geekdom right now.  And I’ll be honest, I’ve dropped a fair amount of money on these things, Wonder Woman, Tattoo Designs, Undersea critters…  Granted, I have always had coloring books and colored pencils.  It’s just easier to find really neat ones now.
So, yes, I love Dungeons After Dark.  For one, the designs are neither too simple nor too complex.  I’m sure you’ve seen those mandala coloring books.  I don’t particularly care for those because it gets repetitive quickly, and I get bored.  I’m more into objects or subjects than designs.

This made me laugh until I couldn’t breathe.

The pictures themselves are awesome!  There are both male and female subjects, as well as some of indeterminate gender.  There are several that are in fact very pin up like, and also some that are just great gags.  I’m not a big fan of things that take themselves too seriously, and this coloring book doesn’t.

Also, none of the non-mammalian creatures have breasts.
Guys, this is one of my serious fucking pet peeves about fantasy art.  “Oh, it’s a snake person, give her a huge rack.”  What the… why?  Snakes don’t breastfeed, you assholes.  They do not have breasts because they do not need breasts.  And I know, I’m breaking the heart of several young men who have never paid attention in biology right now:  Breasts are not for you.
Animals with mammaries have them because they feed their young with them.  That’s it.

We as a species have decided to sexualize them, and as a pansexual woman, I have to admit, I’m pretty fond of them myself.  BUT this does not mean that I think they make something sexy by their mere presence.
So, thank you Cori Redford, for not putting boobs on your snake person or lizard person.  I appreciate that greatly.
Granted the mermaid has boobs, but she also has sharp teeth, and several centuries of mammary-bearing baggage.  So I’ll give you that one.
Also, you included satyrs.  I love satyrs.  Thank you.
The paper quality is very nice.  As someone who is a paper and writing implement snob, I’m very conscious of paper quality.  I have to say, this is some of the nicest coloring book paper I’ve happened upon.
I’m not sure if Cori will be making this coloring book available after the fact, but if you get a chance to pick one up, as someone into coloring, I highly encourage you to do it.
