Geek Girls Rule! #271 – NaBloPoMo Intro Post

Coming to you from my cousin’s couch at 1:00 AM.   Actually, I wrote this on the plane out.

Yeah, rocking it old school.

In addition to November being NaNoWriMo, it is also, apparently, NaBloPoMo, which stands for National Blog Post Month.  I’m going to try to do a post here every, day, and I know I’ve already blown the first, but things have been crazy busy.  They may not all be long blog posts, or even particularly trenchant posts, but with any luck, there will be a post a day here.

A lot of the things I talk about may be outside the usual purview of this blog, but I’m going to try to keep things at least tangentially related.  I want to talk about growing up geek with a nerdy Dad.  I’d like to talk about the differences between the old guard Fen who have been the ones running SF/F conventions for the last twenty, thirty years, and the new Fen who are taking over the as the old guard retire or pass away.

I want to talk about all the toxic things that growing up Nerd can do to you, because normal kids can smell freak a mile away, and it doesn’t help when all you want to talk about is the latest Anne McCaffery book, or how awesome Isaac Asimov is, not to mention having all the fashion sense of a colorblind cactus.

I want to talk about how being Nerd does elevate us on some levels, but that elevation doesn’t make us better than other people.  More interesting, maybe, but not better.  I also want to talk about where the Nerd Superiority complex comes from and why it is so very toxic.  I also want to talk about representing Nerd Culture amongst your normal friends, relations, and co-workers.

There are a lot of things I’ve thought about blogging and have never gotten around to, and some I’ve talked about blogging and never managed to finish.

I’m going to make a concerted effort to put SOMETHING up here at least once a day.

As I write this, I’m on a plane on my way to Michigan to visit a dying relative.  Brain cancer.  He’s still… present, for lack of a better term, but that isn’t going to last, and we’re trying to fit our good-byes in while he still remembers us.  So, things might be a little maudlin around here for a bit.  But that’s something else we need to talk about:  emotions.

So, I hope you enjoy my little experiment in getting my ass to sit down and write out at least one thing a day.  If you think of any topics that you’d like me to cover, please let me know.  You can leave a comment here, or you email me at geekgirlsrule@gmail.com

Thanks for reading, and thank you all for your continued support!

If you like the blog or the podcast, please, please, please donate to keep us going.  Donations go to pay for the podcast hosting and website domain, primarily, and can hopefully help finance a new laptop with working USB ports.

Oh, and Honey Badger’s first two songs are available for download here, for free or pay what you want.  We’re also part of a larger compilation to benefit a local venue, with a song written by yours truly.  Check it out (we’re track 16).

Remember we’ve got the GGR TwitterTumblr and Facebook page.
